Laws & Regulations

Whether you're new to the restaurant industry or a seasoned veteran, membership in the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) is good for your business. WRA strives to help ALL restaurant owners and operators stay on top of Wisconsin laws, regulations and permit requirements.

Laws & Regulations

The laws and regulations governing the restaurant industry can be confusing and complex. WRA helps restaurateurs on this front in two ways:

  • We work to pass legislation that makes running restaurants easier and more profitable (and fight legislation that has the opposite effect)

  • We provide information to help restaurateurs understand and comply with the laws and regulations that are currently in effect

WRA members receive the HERO manual (Handbook for Excellent Restaurant Operations), which includes information on each of the following topics.

alcohol policy
breakage and errors
employee breaks
employee handbook guide
family and medical leave
food code*
harassment

ill employee policy
interview questions
minimum wage *
OSHA Compliance
overtime
posting requirements
smoking

state vs. federal law *
teen labor *
tips and taxes
unemployment comp.
uniforms
wage and hour audits
worker's comp

* Viewable by non-WRA members. All other information is WRA Members Only.

Special Issue Update: Wisconsin Food Code

As the Wisconsin Food Code continues to undergo major changes, WRA works hard to help all restaurateurs understand how the changes affect their business. We also work with restaurateurs and industry suppliers to provide important input to regulators who are developing future food code guidelines at the state and national level.

The Department of Health has created a number of easy-to-use fact sheets explaining some of the code's major changes:
