The all-inclusive ProStart® curriculum helps high school students discover new interests and talents, opens doors for fulfilling industry careers, inspires success and sets a high standard of excellence.
With support from industry members, educators, mentors, sponsors, the WRA Education Foundation and the NRA Educational Foundation, ProStart reaches thousands of students.

- 45 states, plus Guam and U.S. Military Bases
- 81% of students earning the National Certificate of Achievement and 78% of students that compete in the National ProStart Invitational are still studying and/or working in the industry five years later.
College-prep Classes
ProStart integrates projects and hands-on activities for culinary and hospitality management education.
- Field trips, tours and job shadow days demonstrate the variety available in our industry.
- Guest speakers and demos add a dynamic, practical dimension to classes.
- Many quality institutions offer advanced placement and credits toward introductory college courses when ProStart classes have been taken in high school.
Competitions
Competitions challenge students’ culinary and management skills in an exciting venue. First place winners in each category at the state ProStart Invitational move on to the National ProStart Invitational.
Mentoring & Internships
ProStart students train with professional chefs and worksite mentors, learning the art of cooking and managing restaurants, through paid internships. Students obtain valuable work experience, develop relationships and receive a head-start toward college education or a career in foodservice.
Scholarships
ProStart students gain access to a wide range of scholarships. And, special scholarships are available to ProStart alumni that earn a National Certificate of Achievement.
Certificate of Achievement
The ProStart National Certificate of Achievement is an industry-recognized certificate awarded to students who have completed the requirements of the ProStart Program.
Classroom requirements:
- Take Year 1 and Year 2 courses in ProStart curriculum
- Pass the national exams for both Year 1 and Year 2
- Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 overall
Workplace requirements:
- Work 400 hours in a foodservice job or industry establishment
- Up to 200 hours can be in a school restaurant
- A minimum of 200 hours must be in a foodservice business outside of the school environment
- Document hours by keeping pay stubs or obtain letters from employers
- Ask employers or mentors (not teachers!) to complete the ProStart Workplace Checklist
- Submit a checklist for each establishment of employment
- Submit proof of hours and the completed workplace checklist to the ProStart teacher or to Bryan Mowry, Wisconsin’s ProStart Coordinator
