Local Restaurant Owner Honored As Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year

Don Thompson, of Red Mill Supper Club located in Stevens Point, was honored as the Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year (OROY) by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Wisconsin River Valley Chapter, made up Marathon, Wood, Portage, Adams and Waushara and Juneau counties.

The OROY award was presented to Thompson on January 14th, at a WRA chapter meeting held at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau. Rep. Katrina Shankland was in attendance and presented Thompson with a special Legislative Citation.

On Tuesday, March 12, Thompson will also be honored with a commendation medal at the 2013 WRA Awards Dinner gala, taking place at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Milwaukee. The OROY award is given by fellow members of the Wisconsin River Valley Chapter based on success in business, community service and dedication to the restaurant industry.

Thompson has worked in the restaurant industry his entire life and has owned and operated the Red Mill Supper Club with his wife Melissa for 11 years. The Red Mill started as a small country bar and grill in the 1930’s and is now a casual fine dining supper club that seats approximately 100 people. Recently a paranormal group determined that two spirits reside at the Red Mill, playing innocent pranks once in a while.

Thompson has been a strong supporter of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association and the restaurant industry through the years. He currently serves on the WRA state board of directors (since 2010) and serves as the president of the Wisconsin River Valley Chapter (starting in 2010). He is faithful volunteer and participant in WRA’s many events and fundraisers.

“I think the highlight of Don’s career is winning the Outstanding Restaurateur Award,” said Thompson’s wife Melissa. “Don doesn’t agree lightheartedly to be part of things. He gives 100%, so being recognized for all his years as a restaurant owner and operator, and his participation in industry organizations and fundraisers is a great honor.”

In addition, Thompson is very active in his community. He helped make the Get Active Wood County/Smart Meal program and Taste of the Town fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters successful through his participation.

Thompson resides in Stevens Point with his wife Melissa and two children: Dominic and Devin.
