Madison West High School Teacher Honored with Salute to Excellence Award

Madison West High School teacher Diane McKenzie is honored as the High School Educator recipient for the 2014 Salute to Excellence Awards, presented by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Education Foundation. The 2014 High School Educator Award is given to McKenzie for her passion for teaching, strong commitment to ProStart® and dedication to the foodservice industry.

McKenzie has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to foodservice education. With 29 years total of teaching experience, she has been a ProStart instructor and a Family and Consumer Science educator at Madison West High School for the past seven years. McKenzie regularly participates in Wisconsin ProStart Teacher Training and has taken teams to the state ProStart Invitational competition for the past 6 years. In 2011, she led the Madison West ProStart culinary team to place 2nd in the state competition. McKenzie is also a certified ServSafe® food safety training instructor.

“Diane McKenzie has shown incredible dedication to foodservice education,” says Bryan Mowry, Executive Director of the WRA Education Foundation. “Her enthusiasm for teaching really makes a difference to her students, the community and the future of the foodservice industry.”

In addition to her commitment to education, McKenzie is also a strong supporter of the foodservice industry and her community, making the following contributions: helped develop the West High “Class Act Café and Coffee” in partnership with Anodyne Coffee Roasters in Milwaukee, participated in REAP and Slow Food Madison activities and events, volunteered for the Dane County Farmers’ Market Breakfast and prepared and served meals for Church of Christ Thanksgiving meals. The WRA Education Foundation proudly presents Diane McKenzie with the 2014 Salute to Excellence High School Educator Award.

Each year, the WRA EF recognizes five individuals and one company for dedication and commitment to education in the restaurant industry as Salute to Excellence honorees. Other 2014 Salute to Excellence honorees include: Brian Frakes (Marcus Hotels and Resorts, Milwaukee); Kevin McGuinnis (Madison College, Madison); Chico Pope (Buckhorn Supper Club, Milton); Amy and Ryan Scheide (Great Expectations, Wisconsin Rapids); and EWH Small Business Accounting, S.C., Waukesha. Each honoree creates opportunities for people interested in foodservice industry careers. They have worked in a variety of roles, in different parts of the state, but they share an enthusiasm and optimism for the future of the restaurant industry.

The Salute to Excellence awards are presented at the 2014 Celebration of Excellence on Sunday, October 19 at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan. More information on the event is available at www.wirestaurant.org.
