Restaurateur Honored with Salute to Excellence Award

Chico Pope, owner of the Buckhorn Supper Club in Milton, is honored as the restaurateur recipient for the 2014 Salute to Excellence Awards, presented by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Education Foundation. The Foundation presents Chico Pope with this award for his commitment to education, the community and the industry.

“Chico Pope has shown amazing dedication to the Foundation and the foodservice industry,” says Bryan Mowry, Executive Director of the WRA Education Foundation. “His leadership and support has been incredible.”

Pope has proven his enthusiasm for Wisconsin’s foodservice industry and foodservice education through long-time support of the WRA, the WRA Education Foundation and programs within his community. He is very active in WRA as current President of his local WRA Blackhawk Chapter and as current Treasurer of the WRA statewide Board of Directors. Pope works tirelessly to ensure the success of events that raise funds for foodservice education and has taken a leadership role in lobbying for positive change for small restaurants on the state and national level.

“This is an appropriate award recognizing Chico’s achievements,” said Jean Landreman of Landreman’s Family Restaurant in Kaukauna. “He is a great ambassador to the industry and works very hard for the future of foodservice.”

Pope has put his 42 years of industry experience to good use, donating time and energy to the ProStart® program for high school students. He has been a judge for the state-level ProStart® Invitational culinary competition held at the Midwest Foodservice Expo and has assisted with the Orfordville High School and Parkview High School ProStart programs, in various capacities, further demonstrating his commitment and dedication to the future of the foodservice.

The WRA Education Foundation proudly presents Chico Pope with the 2014 Salute to Excellence Restaurateur Award.

Each year, the WRA EF recognizes five individuals and one company for dedication and commitment to education in the restaurant industry as Salute to Excellence honorees. Other 2014 Salute to Excellence honorees include: Brian Frakes (Marcus Hotels and Resorts, Milwaukee); Kevin McGuinnis (Madison College, Madison); Diane McKenzie (Madison West High School, Madison); Amy and Ryan Scheide (Great Expectations, Wisconsin Rapids); and EWH Small Business Accounting, S.C., Waukesha. Each honoree creates opportunities for people interested in foodservice industry careers. They have worked in a variety of roles, in different parts of the state, but they share an enthusiasm and optimism for the future of the restaurant industry.

The Salute to Excellence awards are presented at the 2014 Celebration of Excellence on Sunday, October 19 at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan. More information on the event is available at www.wirestaurant.org.

The ProStart® program, administered by National Restaurant Association Solutions, LLC and state restaurant associations, is a college-prep, two-year curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Students also have the opportunity to participate in paid internships where industry managers mentor them.
