Local Restaurant Owner Honored As Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year

Charlie Gray, owner of Culver’s of Wausau and Rothschild, was honored as the Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year (OROY) by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Wisconsin River Valley Chapter, made up Marathon, Wood, Portage, Adams, Waushara and Juneau counties. The OROY award is given by fellow members of the Wisconsin River Valley Chapter based on success in business, community service and dedication to the restaurant industry.

The OROY award was presented as a surprise to Gray on January 12th, at a WRA chapter meeting held at the Pinewood Supper Club in Mosinee. Sen. Jerry Petrowski and Rep. Dave Heaton were in attendance to present a Legislative Citation to Gray.

On Tuesday, March 10, Gray will also be honored with a commendation medal at the 2015 WRA Awards Dinner gala, taking place at Hilton Milwaukee City Center.

Gray has worked in the restaurant industry since 1996, when he opened the Rothschild Culver’s; his Wausau location opened in 2002. Since the first year he became a restaurateur, Gray has been active in the Wisconsin Restaurant Association. He has held positions on the chapter board since 1997 and has been active with the state board of directors, including service as WRA Chairman of the Board 2013-14. He is tireless in his promotion of the restaurant industry to lawmakers and has traveled to both the state capitol and the national capitol multiple times to lobby on behalf of the industry.

In addition to his work and dedication to the association, Gray served on the board of directors for the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce for six years. He has also spent approximately eight years serving on the Culver’s Franchise Advisory Council.

Gray resides in Rothschild with his wife Torri. They have two children: Charles (Buddy) and Liz.

WRA represents a broad range of foodservice operations and is dedicated to promoting and improving the restaurant industry. For more information, visit www.wirestaurant.org.
