Kayla Correll Greendale High School Teacher Honored with Salute to Excellence Award

Greendale High School teacher Kayla Correll will receive the Wisconsin Restaurant Association (WRA) Education Foundation’s Salute to Excellence Award at the industry’s Celebration of Excellence dinner taking place on October 23 at the Heidel House in Green Lake. She is honored as the High School Educator and ProStart® Teacher of the Year for her strong commitment to ProStart, passion for teaching, and dedication to the foodservice industry.

“Kayla is a model educator who inspires and shapes her students’ futures,” said Connie Fedor, Executive Director of the WRA Education Foundation. “She’s passionate about culinary and hospitality management education and brings that enthusiasm and energy to her students every day.”

As a Family & Consumer Sciences instructor for 6 years at Greendale High School, Correll was instrumental in establishing the school’s ProStart program. She’s created strong partnerships with local chef mentors who help Greendale students master culinary arts skills. She also co-authored the ProStart Teachers Handbook, an 88-page resource of Student Learning Outcomes, recipes, practice exams and in-depth information on running a successful ProStart® program.

In addition, Correll served as a trainer and presenter for ProStart® teachers at the Milwaukee Public Schools.

Each year, the WRA Education Foundation recognizes five individuals and one company for dedication and commitment to education in the restaurant industry as Salute to Excellence honorees. Other 2016 Salute to Excellence honorees include: Michael Buckarma (Becket’s, Oshkosh); Katie Koel (Blackhawk Technical College, Janesville); Michael Althen (Elite Catering, Baraboo); Glenda Woosley (Culver’s of Darboy; Darboy); and Jones Dairy Farm (Fort Atkinson). Each honoree creates opportunities for people interested in foodservice industry careers. They have worked in a variety of roles and in different parts of the state, but they share enthusiasm and optimism for the future of the restaurant industry.

The Salute to Excellence awards will be presented at the 2016 Celebration of Excellence on Sunday, October 23 at the Heidel House in Green Lake. More information on the event is available at www.wirestaurant.org.
