High School Students Compete in State ProStart Competition Winners to Represent Wisconsin at National Competition

Twenty five schools and 124 high school students put their culinary and management skills to the test at the ProStart® Invitational at the Midwest Foodservice Expo on March 14th at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee.

This competition, for students participating in a ProStart program at their high school, consists of two different competitions: a Management Competition and a Culinary Competition. The Management Competition involves demonstrating their knowledge of the hospitality industry by developing a business proposal for a new restaurant concept.  The proposal will include written and oral presentations, as well as visual displays. For the Culinary Competition, students prepare a three course meal and are judged by foodservice industry professionals and college educators on teamwork, presentation, cooking procedures, knife skills and sanitation.

Badger High School in Lake Geneva won first place in the culinary competition (instructor Angela Yager). Greendale High School won second place (instructor Kayla Correll). Portage High School won third place (instructor Jane Hemming).

Franklin High School won first place in the management competition (instructor Linda Krause). Badger High School won second place (instructor Angela Yager). Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids won third place (instructor Lynn Borski).

Portage won the Best Beef Entrée contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Beef Council.

The ProStart Invitational is a showcase of the young talent in Wisconsin’s growing foodservice industry.  Over $1.9 million in scholarships was awarded to competition winners. The winning team in each of the two competitions goes on to compete at the 16th Annual National ProStart Invitational in North Charleston, SC April 28 – 30, 2017.

The ProStart program, administered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and state restaurant associations, is a curriculum designed to teach high school students the skills needed for careers in the restaurant and foodservice industry. When students meet academic standards, complete a checklist of competencies, and participate in at least 400 hours of a mentored work experience, they are awarded the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement that signifies they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce.
